Continuing Professional Development – Educational and Clinical Supervisors

All Clinical and Educational Supervisors must attend to their ongoing professional development as trainers to maintain their accreditation.

Continuing Professional Development: named Educational Supervisors

Training should be focused on skills development and education.

Although we provide a suite of CPD training courses covering a number of topics and skills, there is the option of Supervisors doing other courses (provided internally and externally) counting towards CPD if they meet the desired criteria. Other options that supervisors can use as part of their ongoing CPD are as follows (please note, this is not a complete list, but gives examples of educational meetings and courses):

  • Royal College and other Medical Society seminars/conferences that offer supervision/educational content
  • College Tutor training
  • Examiner/assessor training
  • Medical School teacher/tutor training
  • ARCP panel member
  • Specialty School education updates
  • Postgrad Centre/Trust education updates
  • HEE-SW Joint education conference
  • BMA/GMC events
  • GP Practice visit
  • Foundation Developmental days
  • Appraiser training

Please note:

  • ARCP panel attendance - 0.5 of a day can be classed as educational time for formal ARCP attendance in a 5-year cycle.
  • Formal national interviews – 0.5 of a day can be classed as educational time for formal national and regional interviews in a 5-year cycle.
  • College examinations - 0.5 of a day can be classed as educational time for attending as an college examiner (or observing) in a 5-year cycle.
  • Appraiser training - 0.5 of a day can be classed as educational time for attending formal appraisal training in a 5-year cycle.

Requirement for ES: 2.5 days within 5 years, as recommended by the GMC.

If the required CPD is not undertaken the supervisor will be advised of this, and must undertake further training in order to maintain their accreditation status. If no CPD has been done after 5 years since initial accreditation, the Educational Supervisor will have to repeat the full initial Educational Supervisor training to enable re-accreditation.

The educational role should be assessed as part of the individual’s Trust annual appraisal process. CPD requirements and ongoing accreditation should be discussed in this meeting.

Continuing Professional Development: named Clinical Supervisors

Requirement for CS: 1.5 days within 5 years, as recommended by the GMC.

CPD events as above. If the required CPD is not undertaken the supervisor will be advised of this, and must undertake training in order to maintain their accreditation status. If no CPD has been done after 5 years since initial accreditation, the Clinical Supervisor will have to repeat the full initial Clinical Supervisor training to enable re-accreditation.

All supervisors, both ‘named’ Clinical Supervisors and Educational Supervisors must renew their Equality and Diversity training each 3 years.
