Benefit

Trainee Progression

Coordinated approach to course delivery that meets regional endoscopy training need ensuring training needs are met at the right time & competence at completion of training.

Increased access to basic skills courses for SW trainees.

Increased numbers of gastroenterology trainees achieving JAG certification by end of St4

Increased access to training lists for surgical trainees

Mandatory courses delivered at a timely and appropriate time in training pathway to maximise the benefit of the course.

Supply of skilled workforce with appropriate competencies to achieve CCT.

Skilled workforce to meet service delivery demand

Positive impact on service delivery; reduction in patient backlog / waiting lists and improved patient care and experience.

Endoscopy Fellowships

Programme of Fellowship opportunities enabling  defined periods of training to focus on increasing endoscopy experience & expertise, accelerating learning curves & improving patient care

The aim of the fellowships is to increase endoscopy training opportunities for  the  academy  fellows  whilst  still  being  able  to  access  other  speciality  training. Five sessions per week will be allocated to speciality training. The mix of clinic, theatre ward and on-call time will be allocated by the employing trust. These five sessions will be in effect “backfill sessions” freeing up one of the local SpRs/StRs and enabling  them  to  attend  endoscopy  for additional training and/or deliver service lists. One session will be allocated to education / research / admin

Academy fellows will also be expected to join a monthly review meeting run by the Director of SWETA. This will be an opportunity to share progress, challenges and will have an educational component focussed on endoscopy training.

Further opportunities will be available to Academy fellows dependent on sub-speciality interests, including:

  • Supporting simulation and endoscopy human factors courses
  • Endoscopy training research
  • Sub-speciality clinical work -dependent on host trust

Accelerated learning for SW trainees increasingly likelihood of achieving timely CCT with the appropriate endoscopic competencies.

Skilled workforce to meet service delivery demands therefore helping to reduce waiting lists.

Trainees with earlier JAG certification able to provide service lists during their training to support service demands.

Improved patient care and experience as workforce more able to meet demand therefore reduced waiting lists and access to endoscopy.

Immersion Training

Opportunity for regional trainees to access immersion training & potential involvement in  training research delivered by faculty trainers

Impact on learning curves (anticipate accelerated learning curve)

Access to the provision of Immersion training in SW Academies.  Regional SpRs will rotate into the academy units for immersion training. 8 point training lists will be provided (5 lists per week).
Additional training lists provided by independent sector in 2022

Accelerated learning for SW trainees increasingly likelihood of achieving timely CCT with the appropriate endoscopic competencies.

Skilled workforce to meet service delivery demands therefore helping to reduce waiting lists.

Trainees with earlier JAG certification able to provide service lists during their training to support service demands.

Improved patient care and experience as workforce more able to meet demand therefore reduced waiting lists and access to endoscopy.

Course Provision & Simulation Based Education
